The Silver Reed line of machines are available in four "gauges", in other words the measurement between the needles. The fine gauge is 3.6mm, standard gauge is 4.5 mm, the mid-gauge is 6.5 mm, and the bulky is 9mm. You need to decide what weight of yarn you want your knitting machine to use before choosing the gauge of machine.

The fine gauge machine is now discontinued and not available new.

From within the gauges, the machines come as a manual (hand-manipulated), punchcard, or electronic. Decide how much you want the machine to do. With the manual machine, you have to select the needles for color changes, tuck, or lace. With punchcard, the needles will select for you. With the electronic, not only will the needles select for you, but you can program your computer (using DesignaKnit) to talk to you and tell you when to decrease, increase, and change colors. Its really cool!
