Bond America's Ultimate Sweater Machine (USM), made in the USA, is an easy-to-learn method of maching knitting. It comes with a DVD and complete instruction and pattern book to help learn you various techniques from setting up the machine to casting on, knitting, ribbing, and binding off.
The USM makes stockinette stitch fabric (knit one row, purl one row) with the purl side facing you. It is easy to hand manipulate texture (ribbing, cables, moss, seed, and garter accents) as well as color (Fair Isle and intarsia/geometrics). There are six patented keyplates to use with sport to bulky weight yarns. The USM weighs around 10 pounds and comes in a suitcase size box which requires minimal assembly. You will want to make sure you have a flat table with no lip or rounded edge so the machine knits properly.
The basic machines comes with 100 needles, expandable with 30-needles extension kits. Depending upon the weight of yarn used, that means the knitted piece can measure around 20" on up to 25" to make sizes up to XL. While advertising says "Learn in an evening", and, yes, the basic swatch can easily be knit in an evening, practical experience requires practice to become proficient at using the machine and learning the various techniques required to do more advanced projects. Once the basics are learned, it is fairly quick to make a sweater or an afghan. The basic pattern book that comes with the machine is very complete, giving you patterns and step-by-step instructions for everything from hats to purses and afghans to sweaters. You can also adapt many hand knitting patterns and, here at Knitting Today, we specialize in assisting with that adaptation as long as the patterns are purchased from Knitting Today.
